Lily Donohue, a 13 year old activist, testified before the joint committee on April 22, 2004. It was "Take Your Child To Work Day" and parents, legislators, lobbyists and activists alike were all equally impressed with this intelligent young lady who spoke about preserving our water for future generations. Lily said it best, "we don’t inherit the earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children".

PUBLIC HEARING HIGHLIGHTS

There is an abiding need to protect the incomparably pristine water resources and natural beauty of the New Jersey Highlands, so as to preserve them intact, in trust, and forever and ever green for the pleasure, enjoyment, and safe usage of future generations. Our children today, and their children tomorrow, will be depending on the decisions we make about water quality right now.

The Highlands legislation is a testament to how our lives can be touched by the natural world around us and is a reminder of how much New Jersey’s past and future are connected to its environment. Through the legislative process, we’ve heard from supporters and opponents. To everyone who made their concerns known to us, through the public hearings held on the legislation, or through the various phone calls, E-mails and letters received at our District Office, thank you for contributing in making the best Highlands bill possible.
